Welcome to Postgraduate Program in Physics (PPGFis) at Ufes

  • Atomic and molecular physics studies fundamental methods and principles relatives to the atomic and molecular spectroscopy, structure and interactions. The basic topics include the electronic structure (atoms with one, two, and several electrons, Thomas Fermi Model, Hartree-Fock Model, and the Auto-Consistent Field) and the molecular structure (Born-Oppenheimer separation, rotation and vibration of diatomic molecules, polyatomic molecules, collisions, cross section, Born approximation, electron-atom and ion-atom collisions, and energy loss of ions in the matter). It realizes works including improved Hatree-Fock and Dirac-Foc Methods (with the developing of Gaussians bases) which are used to non-relativistic and relativistic calculus of the atom and molecule properties.

  • The research line in Fundamental Interactions includes the following topics, in alphabetic order: extragalactic astrophysics, cosmology, mathematic physics, physics of particles, classical and quantum gravitation, and classical and quantum field theory.
    The research line in fundamental interactions is predominantly theoretical, and it uses recent results from large experiments, both from high energies physics or large scale surveys (astrophysics and cosmology). Currently, this line has members that are also part of large surveys, in particular, the J-PAS (Javalambre physics of the accelerating universe).
    The research requires the mastering of several aspects of mathematical and computational methods (either numeric or symbolic), and it also relies on several external collaborators.

  • Development of advanced ceramics (superconductors, photovoltaics and magnetic) investigated by magnetic optical and high pressure experiments. Tensorial studies on Ortotropics materials. Field Theory applied to supercondutivity, including the Lorentz-symmetry breaking and Higgs' mechanisms.

  • The aim of this research line is to investigate the structural, electronics, magnetics and transport properties of bulk or nanostructured materials by using theoretical/computational methods and experimental techniques which allow to the knowledge about the electromagnetic interactions among the atoms and their neighborhoods.
    The main goals of these researches are the development of new materials (metals, ceramics, carbon and hybrid materials), the deep understanding about the physicochemical characteristics and the evaluation of their potential for technological applications. Novel bulk or nanostructured materials have been obtained by technique like thin film deposition, wet chemical routes and thermal/mechanical processing.
    Spectroscopic methods that allow a local study of atomic environments (like Mössbauer spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance and Raman scattering), physical properties measurements in a large range of temperature (2-1000 K)and/or application of high magnetic fields (up to 9 T) and microscopy techniques (such as scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy) are applied to the experimental characterization of the properties of newly developed materials. From the theoretical/computational point of view, physical properties calculations and structural modeling are performed by methods based on the Density Functional Theory or on the Molecular Dynamics.
    Recent advances have been achieved in the fields of thin films, nanostructured intermetallic compounds, magnetic nanoparticles, nanoporous materials, graphene and related materials, among others.

The Postgraduate Program in Physics is based at the Center for Exact Sciences of the Federal University of Espírito Santo, in Brazil. The program brings together scholars performing cutting edge research to address the regional, national and international needs of the field. The program qualifies professionals to carry out high level research, to work in higher education and in the technological and industrial sectors.

The creation of the undergraduate degrees in physics at the Federal University of Espírito Santo in 1976 paved the way for the consolidation of the Department of Physics, that was strengthened, during the years, through the personnel qualification and hiring of Doctors. The Postgraduate Program in Physics was established in 1992 through the accreditation of the master’s degree. The rise in academic output and professional enhancement of staff members resulted in the creation of the doctoral degree in physics in 2003.

The Postgraduate Program in Physics currently collaborates with several national and international institutions and researchers. The program also holds multiple partnerships with companies, focusing on four research areas, namely, applied physics, atomic and molecular physics, condensed matter physics and fundamental interactions.

The program is based in Vitória-ES, offering the course of Master’s Degree in Physics since 1992 e the course of Doctoral Degree in Physics since 2003 and has an academic qualification profile certified by CAPES, receiving 4 on its last evaluation.

The program already has 144 masters and 100 doctors and counts with 74 students regularly enrolled, being 30 in the masters and 44 in the doctorate.
